QSF18 testing will be instrumental in research that may lead to supersonic flight over land on a commercial level, drastically reducing flight times and ensuring the nation’s standing as a pinnacle in aviation around the globe.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is preparing for an upcoming flight campaign to study quiet supersonic community response data. There are two important dates for La Marque citizens:

  • Galveston County residents will receive survey recruitment letters beginning Wednesday, September 19, 2018. The letters will be sent randomly to residents of Galveston, Tiki Island, La Marque and Texas City. Participants will be asked to provide feedback on the sounds they hear as a result of the flight tests.
  • Quiet Supersonic Flights 2018 Campaign, or QSF18, is slated to begin on November 5, 2018. The tests will feature F-18 aircraft performing dive maneuvers off the coast of Galveston. This maneuver will create a noise signature that will be audible.

QSF18 will be instrumental in NASA’s mission to carry out data-driven research that may one day help lead to supersonic flight over land on a commercial level, drastically reducing flight times and ensuring the nation’s standing as a pinnacle in aviation around the globe. NASA has been working with federal, state and county officials on this project for several months. They are coordinating with the Port of Galveston and United States Coast Guard to make sure the maritime community are aware of the sonic booms. First responders and emergency response organizations have all been briefed.
