Community encouraged to get involved, volunteer to host a neighborhood gathering October 3
LA MARQUE, TEXAS (September 6, 2017) - City of La Marque currently has 13 citizens registered to host a block party on National Night Out 2017, which is slated for Tuesday, October 3, and Police Chief Kirk Jackson is looking for more people to step up and host a gathering. National Night Out (NNO) is a national, annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood fellowship. Jackson encourages participation and hopes this will be a banner year for NNO.
“Strong communities are safe communities and it all starts with a friendly hello”, said Chief Jackson. “Citizens looking to engage in their community are encouraged to host a block party. Hosts can open their homes, set it up around the cul-de-sac, meet at a community park or even partner with a local church. Our goal for this year is 20 registered block parties in La Marque.”
Block parties range from simple gatherings all the way up to themed cookouts. Police, Fire, EMS, City Council and City staff create a schedule and attend block parties all over the city
“In year’s past, we’ve sent a group of city officials to every block party,” Jackson said. “We hope to continue that practice but La Marque is growing, and growing fast. We are working on the schedule now so interested parties should get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
The goal of National Night Out to enhance relationships between neighbors and develop a true sense of community. Knowing your neighbors makes neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out also provides an opportunity for citizens to engage with city staff and emergency personnel under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states on the first Tuesday in August. Texas celebrates on the first Tuesday in October.
Please save the date for Tuesday, October 3, 2017, and plan to participate. For information, email Chief Jackson at k.jackson@cityoflamarque.org or call police dispatch at 409-938-9269.
