The cemetery will join the more than 1,400 participating locations across the country to Remember, Honor and Teach at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2018.
The City of La Marque will join others around the nation to honor veterans that have been laid to rest in their local cemetery as part of the annual Wreaths Across America observance.
The La Marque Cemetery Board raised funds to place veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of all the local heroes laid to rest at La Marque Cemetery and Rising Star Cemetery, to ensure that the individuals will never be forgotten and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration.
Ceremonies begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2018, and will include a program with La Marque Mayor Bobby Hocking and La Marque cemetery board members. La Marque residents and others throughout Galveston County are invited to participate and help with the placement of wreaths. Volunteers should arrive by 10:30 a.m. at 1709 S Oak St, La Marque, Texas 77568.
Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks that, over the past ten years, has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for freedom.
“This is La Marque’s way of honoring sacrifices that have been made for the good of our country,” said Kurt Koopmann, event coordinator for this year’s ceremony. “It is not an effort to decorate graves; it is act of remembering the lives of those that gave all.”
National Wreaths Across America Day is a free, non-political, community event open to all people.
