September marks National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. While there is no simple solution to this public health problem, there are ways to support children on their journey to good health.

The latest issues of the Galveston County Health District (GCHD) newsletter Pulse of the District and the Coastal Health & Wellness (CHW) newsletter The Coastal Wave are now available.

 September marks National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Did you know about one in five children in the U.S. is considered obese? While there is no simple solution to this public health problem, there are ways to support children on their journey to good health. Learn how we can all do our part to stop childhood obesity. You can also check out our Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) Cooking Corner featuring a delicious recipe for Teriyaki Pork Chops with Blueberry-Ginger Relish.

 Take a few minutes to meet our new Immunizations Program Manager Debbie Marshall in this month’s Employee Spotlight feature, check out our community outreach corner and learn more about National Food Safety Education Month. One in six Americans – that’s 48 million people – get sick each year from food poisoning. The good news is there are ways to protect yourself and your family from falling ill. Learn how to be safe while preparing food at home and when dining out. September also marks National Preparedness Month. Galveston County is no stranger to disasters. And, while the type of disaster may change, preparing ahead of time is vital to offer the best protection. Check out our preparedness tips in this month’s newsletter.

 Also, the Animal Resource Center will host its low-cost pet vaccine clinics Sept. 13 and 14. Take advantage of  low-cost vaccines, flea control and heartworm testing and treatment, plus microchipping and county registration. Galveston Area Ambulance Authority helped the City of Galveston celebrate its grand opening of Fire Station No. 1 in August. GAAA Medic 1, 2 and 10, along with supervisors, will also operate from the new station. GAAA Director of EMS Amy Weber, GAAA EMS Operations Manager Tommy Leigh and GCHD CEO Kathy Barroso attended the grand opening.

 CHW celebrated National Health Center Week Aug. 4-10 and hosted a Community Resource Fair on Aug. 9. Guests enjoyed learning more about: CHW medical, dental and counseling services; American Cancer Society services and resources; back-to-school immunization schedules; Healthy Concepts Clinic; free HIV, Hepatitis C and Syphilis testing; free blood pressure and vision screenings; pet microchipping; adoptions through the Animal Resource Center and more!

 September is Healthy Aging Month, designed to highlight the positive aspects of growing older and the importance of improving physical and mental well-being. Americans are living longer, in greater numbers, and are enjoying active lives. In fact, 10,000 people are turning 65 a day. With that comes challenges in aging. Eating healthy, staying active and keeping up regular doctor checkups are just a few ways seniors can maintain their health as they age.
