The La Marque Fire Department will be conducting a prescribed burn on Monday, February 1, 2021, at the University of Houston Coastal Research Center off FM 2004. This planned burn is part of an ongoing partnership, providing natural management of coastal prairie lands.
Monday's weather should allow smoke to lift and drift, causing little to no impact on our citizens and neighbors. Fire will not be visible from the road, but smoke will be visible from southern portions of Galveston County and IH-45.
According to LMFD Captain Brennan Briggs, prescribed fire is used for many reasons, including hazard reduction and habitat improvement for native plants and wildlife.
"By using fire as a tool, invasive species can be eradicated, providing a healthier environment for native species without the use of heavy machinery," said Briggs.
Along with environmental benefits, prescribed burns provide training fire departments across our region.
