According to LMFD Captain Brennan Briggs, the burn will serve two purposes. First, the burn will create more usable park space by clearing shorelines and fishing areas. Second, the burn will help manage wetland habitat using a natural resource.
Citizens are encouraged to enjoy nearby Mahan Park at 2702 Woodlawn, Carbide Park at 4102 Main Street, or one of our other many city parks.
The March 18 planned burn is in preparation for the upcoming La Marque Kid Fish Event. According to LMFD Captain Brennan Briggs, the burn will serve two purposes. First, the burn will create more usable park space by clearing shorelines and fishing areas. Second, the burn will help manage wetland habitat using a natural resource.
"Fire management in wetland habitats removes the buildup of thatch, controls woody plant species and exposes soil for native seeds, said Briggs. "This provides a healthier, more diverse habitat for both plants and wildlife."
Thursday's weather should allow smoke to lift and drift, causing little to no impact on our citizens and neighbors. Smoke will be visible from southern portions of Galveston County and IH-45 from around 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Along with environmental benefits, prescribed burns provide training opportunities for the La Marque Fire Department Wildfire Division. Follow LMFD on Facebook to see photos and updates.
